India's insurance sector has firmly established itself on the global stage. According to the Swiss Re Sigma Report (No. 2/2025), India remained the 10th largest insurance market in the world by nominal premium volumes in 2024, with a global market share of 1.8%.

Growth Trajectory

The Swiss Re analysis projects mid-term annual premium growth at 6.9% between 2026 and 2030, making India the strongest growing major insurance market — outpacing China (~4%), the US (~2%), and Western European markets.

India's Position in Global Insurance

India ranks among the top 10 insurance markets globally by premium volume, driven by its large population and rapid economic growth. The life insurance segment, dominated by LIC, generates premiums exceeding Rs 3.5 lakh crore annually. The growing middle class — projected to reach 600 million by 2030 — represents an expanding addressable market for protection, savings, and retirement products.

Global reinsurers are increasingly viewing India as a growth market rather than just a reinsurance buyer. Swiss Re, Munich Re, and GIC Re have all expanded their Indian operations, bringing global best practices in risk assessment and product development. This international engagement is accelerating the domestic market's maturation.
