Insurance complaints data shared by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in Parliament on August 4 shows life insurers received 98,443 complaints in FY2025-26 (resolving 97,988), general insurers 95,258 (resolving 87,083) and health insurers 41,658 (resolving 41,347). In Q1 FY27, life insurers received 24,034 complaints, general insurers 26,675 and health insurers 12,269, with general insurers accounting for the largest share of pending complaints at 3,483.

Claim-related grievances were the single largest category in FY26, accounting for 41% of total complaints. Insurers received 1,23,654 claim-related complaints during the year, of which 1,16,015 were resolved, leaving 7,639 pending. 'Others' (45,790) and 'Unfair Business Practices' (28,789) were the next most common categories, followed by policy-related issues (27,082) and survival claims (23,658).

Chaudhary said IRDAI monitors complaints relating to mis-selling, unfair business practices and claim issues through the Bima Bharosa portal. He noted the regulator can issue directions under Section 34 of the Insurance Act, 1938, and impose penalties under Section 102 — with the maximum penalty raised from Rs 1 crore to Rs 10 crore under the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act, 2025.
