Non-life insurance premium growth slowed to 5.7% year-on-year in July 2026, with gross direct premium totalling Rs 31,397.6 crore, according to data from the General Insurance Council. This was a sharp moderation from the 15.9% growth seen in June.
Multi-line general insurers grew 7.7% to Rs 26,335.3 crore, while standalone health insurers posted a robust 28.8% increase to Rs 4,665.9 crore. Specialised PSU insurers saw premiums decline more than 75% to Rs 396 crore. Among large players, Star Health grew 18.8% to Rs 1,803.6 crore, Niva Bupa rose 33.7%, United India Insurance gained 28.1%, while Oriental Insurance declined 17.6%.
On a cumulative basis, non-life premium underwritten rose 9.5% year-on-year to Rs 1.19 trillion during the April-July period.
