Amazon Pay will expand its insurance offering to travel and other products after launching health insurance in partnership with HDFC ERGO, CEO Vikas Bansal told Reuters, reported via Asia Insurance Post. Amazon Pay operates as a registered corporate agent and already distributes vehicle insurance. Amazon holds a minority stake in Acko and Bansal said the company remains open to further insurance investments.
Context: distribution is shifting
Amazon Pay is a corporate agent, not an insurer: it distributes products manufactured by licensed insurers. That model has already reshaped distribution in India through web aggregators and bank channels. A payments platform with a large consumer base entering health and travel adds a mainstream, low-friction purchase route and increases reach beyond traditional agents.
Why it matters
- Access: health and travel cover become discoverable at the point where customers already transact, which can widen protection among buyers who do not have an agent relationship.
- Competition: intermediaries that compete on convenience face a larger platform, even as the insurers behind the products remain the same.
- Choice and fine print: comparison at speed can obscure exclusions, room-rent limits, waiting periods and network restrictions. Ease of purchase does not change the need to read the terms.
- Regulatory watch: corporate-agent conduct, suitability and disclosure are already an IRDAI enforcement focus, as recent fines show.
What to do before buying
- Identify the insurer, not just the app: the product is manufactured and the claim is paid by a licensed insurer.
- Check the seller is a registered corporate agent via
irdai.gov.into Regulated Entities. - Read the waiting periods, exclusions and claim process before paying. Keep the policy document, not just the app confirmation.
- For travel cover, confirm medical, baggage and cancellation limits and the claim-contact route abroad.
