India's life insurance industry started FY27 on a strong note, with new business premiums (NBP) increasing 16.6% year-on-year to Rs 1.09 lakh crore in the April-June quarter, driven by strong performance from private insurers, according to a CareEdge Ratings report on July 10.

Private insurers strengthened their share of industry NBP to nearly 40%, up from 36.5% a year earlier, while LIC continued to account for around 60% of the market. On a monthly basis, industry NBP rose 13.1% in June to Rs 46,490.5 crore, reversing a 3.1% contraction a year ago, led by 36.8% growth from private insurers.

In the non-life sector, the industry collected Rs 87,628 crore in the April-June quarter, up 11.1%, with June growth at 16.7%. Standalone health insurers led, posting 31% growth in June and around 33% in the quarter, with Niva Bupa up 34% and Star Health 19.2%.
