The most expensive motor misunderstanding is timing. Premium paid is not the same as risk incepted. A gap of one day, a missed inspection, or a reload after lapse can mean no cover at the exact hour of an accident. This guide maps start, stop, gap and restart without re-teaching TP versus OD structure.
Method and data basis
Built from standard Indian motor policy wording concepts (inception of risk, period of insurance, break-in and reload practice, inspection requirements) and IRDAI policy status and renewal directions as applied by insurers. Product schedules still vary: always read your own start and end timestamps. This is not a tariff calculator; IDV and premium math stay in the motor premium calculator track and TP hike explainers.
Date of inception: what actually starts cover
- The schedule states a start date and time, commonly aligned to standard practice of cover beginning at 00:00 on the stated date rather than the minute of payment.
- New purchase: risk usually incepts from the chosen start after underwriting and, where required, inspection or documentation clearance.
- Renewal: continuous renewal incepts where the previous policy left off if paid and accepted in time. Late payment can create a fresh inception with a gap.
Gap and break-in
A break-in is a lapse between end of one policy period and acceptance of the next. Consequences stack: no third party or own damage liability cover for the gap period, potential police trouble for driving without valid cover, NCB impact depending on rules and evidence, and an inspection (or digital inspection) before restart. Some products also restrict own damage benefits right after restart until conditions clear. Do not drive on an expired schedule hoping grace will save you.
Reload and restart
Reload is the insurer restarting cover after a break under set conditions (documentation, inspection, premium, sometimes a fresh proposal). Reload is not a retroactive backdate: it does not pay for a claim inside the old gap. If anyone offers backdating that would cover a past loss, treat it as fraud pressure, not service.
Grace is not a free motor bridge
Health and life grace rules differ from motor. Even where a renewal window exists operationally, the liability question on a public road is whether a valid policy was in force for that period. Do not plan a multi-day uninsured drive around a call-centre assurance.
Buyer checklist
- Write down inception timestamp from the schedule, not the payment receipt alone.
- Set a calendar alert seven days before end date.
- If already lapsed, expect inspection and a new inception; do not use the vehicle until active in the insurer system.
- Confirm status in the official portal (active, pending, lapsed).
- Keep prior policy copy for NCB evidence where required.
What not to do
Do not assume payment SMS equals cover. Do not accept verbal backdate. Do not let a broker bind a policy with a future start while you drive today.
